Shipwrecked

.
This past week has been spent on the Isle of Mull, off the West Coast of Scotland.

People we know have taken over a hotel in Tobermory and needed some up to date photos of it, as well as the spectacular views. In return for a few days of clicking my camera, we were given the best room in the house.

During our stay we drove round various parts of the island and came across some old boats, just rotting away on the shoreline. Well, there's only one thing you can do at that point, and that's screech to a halt, leap out of the car and start taking photos, in the full knowledge they'll look fabulous in full or partial black and white.

It's well worth clicking on these images for larger versions

Thanks Anna :)

I went and looked up on a map where you had gone. The boat in the pictures did not inspire me with confidence, especially after reading your status update about everyone on edge after the trip home.

But the pictures themselves are outstanding. You certainly know what you are doing.

Great photos, Kim! I have a fascination with shipwrecks and diving disasters and the like, and the beauty of decay...sweet.

Word verification: myocest. Sex with eye-patch wearing pirates?

wow ~ those pics are simply fantastic!! I especially love the very first one ~ it has a certain ancient charm to it ~ like you know you would see if you visited a lonely beach somewhere in Greece.
Very nice work! ~

I have to go there. I like all the pictures, but like the last one best. Though I love the blue/green colour in the second, it reminds me of that William Carlos Williams poem 'Pastoral'.

I like the fourth photo of the red bridge, and the captain probably had a red beard to match.

If I'm not mistaken, this vessel may have belonged to Robert the Bruce.

Well spotted - things of great beauty as far as I'm concerned. I hope you fared better with the elements than we did - that horizontal rain - and we couldn't get to Iona because of it which was a great shame. I'm sure it would have been a mystical experience.
I seem to remember seeing the phone box which Wendy Hiller used in that great film 'I know where I'm going,' So romantic! If I'd known then, when I saw the film, what was going to happen I wouldn't have been so sad.

Brave Astronaut - the ferry back to the mainland was almost cancelled due to the high winds. Fortunately it went ahead anyway and the kids had loads of fun attempting to walk in a straight line down the aisles and failing.

Andraste - Aaarrrrr...

Red - thank you :)

Savannah - if you'd like a high resolution pic to print off, let me know and I'll email it to you :)

Eryl - Mull is well worth the visit, even though Bob's too old for the Balamory connection :)

Charlie - I think you're right, and he might have inherited from King Arthur.

Debra - thank you :)

Pat - actually it was the hotel in the film, "I know where I'm going" that we stayed in.

Nice and crisp. You have a steady hand or a tripod.

Kim Ayres said...

Thanks Bock. Strong daylight meant I didn't need the tripod on these :)

The third shot is my favorite, but all good. This is fun stuff.

I believe if I could get half done awake, what you get done bone tired, I would be pretty efficient.

Kim Ayres said...

Ah, but Carole, what you see is the edited highlights. You don't see me yawning, falling asleep, moaning about being tired and bouncing after a double espresso :)

Love it. The colors are so subdued and the feeling is one of history. Anyway, a million stories could be inspired by those shots.

By the way, I have to get a new camera. Mine is lost!

Kim Ayres said...

Kanani - either that or find a wealthy client to fly me over to take some photos for you :)
