The blog of photographer Kim Ayres

Uncky Rogan

.
When I was a kid, I never knew what to do with smaller kids. And when I was a teenager I would avoid these strange creatures at all costs.

As a father I have a bit more idea how to cope with them, but I wouldn't say I'm a natural. Certainly I find it easier once they are old enough to play chess or discuss philosophy.

My son, Rogan, on the other hand, has always been wonderful with kids. He has a knack for making them laugh and get over excited. Quite simply, kids love him.

My stepdaughter and grandchildren were down at the weekend and I was fortunate enough to capture some of that relaxed connection between him and his youngest nephew, Cormac.

As always, you can click on the images for larger versions.

Your son definitely is someone to look up to. :)

Chris - thank you :)

Hope - he's now the tallest in the house - apart from when his older brother comes to visit :)

You caught some great pics. You are raising some pretty cool human beings sir. Now, tell me again. What is it you are not good at?

Fantastic images, I am especially fond of the one with the little one near the camera. real character and feeling there.

Matt - thank you - and thanks for taking the time to come and comment here :)

The pictures have impact...I particularly like the ones where the two boys are looking at each other...with such happiness and ease...comfortable with each other and themselves.

I'm like you with kids. I try and avoid mums of newborns lest they try and hand me the baby.

The photos are grand and Rogan looks so relaxed!

Very, very sweet pictures indeed!

What I love is the cool, laid back, amused tolerance from Rogan and the blind adoration from the little one.
You've captured that and I award you first prize with honours;)

Theanne - we spend ages trying to get kids to look into the camera, but often the best shots are when they're not :)

Allen - thank you :)

Parsnip - thanks :)

Se2 - thank you :)

Savannah - thanks :)

Jayne - :)

Emma - Actually, I'm not too bad when they are little babies. It's from about 6 months to 8 years that I have the biggest difficulties...

Lassie & Laddie - :)

Pat - thank you for that award - I accept it with great humility and smugness :)

Wonderful, wonderful Kim. You captured The Moment. Your natural talent continues to impress me and cause the Jealous Hairs to rise to rise on the back of my neck.

What Pat said. I have a cousin like Rogan. It's definitely some latent DNA strand.

Delightful!

I always felt awkward around children. Now I think the beard gives them pause.

I never had children but through a 2nd marriage have a granddaughter who is almost 4 and a complete mystery to me but a total joy. I envy those that are natural with children. I think I taught my 2 dogs well - they also have no idea how to behave around a toddler - they go hise, sometimes I wish I could too.

Love the last photo.

Well done Kim!! On the pictures, the post, and especially on the bright young men! It is so refreshing to see young adults that can appreciate others around them. I can tell right away that young Rogan must not be selfish or self centered, but instead a very decent sort of young man, comfortable with himself, & confident in his nature. Now who would he have learned that from, eh? Very nice work, indeed, Kim! There is a good father & mother behind that young man.

Awww, those photos are adorable.

They remind me of the men in my family, they love children.

OMG These pictures are so cute!! Can I take him home?

Ron - it's not natural talent, it's practice and passion. Like everyone, my first photos were blurry and had a finger across half the lens. But over the past couple of years I've taken about 30,000 photos. Anyone taking that many photos is going to improve, but you have to want it enough to take that many :)

Eryl - thank you :)

Aayushi - the first one is my favourite too :)

~:C:~ - thank you :)

Jayne - it's a great combination - I was fortunate to capture it :)

Lynne - family photos are allowed to have smiles in them :)

Adila - who can resist pinky tippy toes?

Alice - he must get it from Maggie's side as my Dad was never that great with kids either

Alan - beards are great for tickling their faces with :)

Jacqui - I don't have much idea what to do around dogs either...

Red - very kind of you to say :)

Guyana Gal - sounds like you have a great family :)

Sandy - If you're talking about my son, I don't think he'd object, but if you're talking about my grandson I think you'll find there's a queue :)

Nicely captured... they look perfect, content and lovely to look at... not many young men are patient with kids and not many dads can take photography as good as you.. enjoyed the post!

I guess am also pretty much like you :) Not yet father, but am sure when I do become one I might actually not really change much.

Great pics! I always envy people who are so natural with kids and just know how to get them to smile and laugh and play. My dad is also like your son...I wonder if such genes skip a generation :)

Kim Ayres said...

Viji - thank you :)

Siddhartha - you will change when you become a dad - it is easier to be enthusiastic with your own kids even if you struggle with other people's. But I have to admit I find over 7s much easier to cope with :)
