Smells like new carpet

.
This is it! After 2 years of being cramped in a small corner of Maggie’s studio, I now have my very own space again.

With Maggie recently settled in her new studio in Kirkcudbright (see Studios), we’ve been revamping the room she vacated.

The yucky green carpet that was here when we moved in has been rolled up and put in the attic; the walls have all been given a fresh coat of white paint; the creamy-yellow ceiling, door, skirting board, window frame and radiator have also been painted white; and finally, on Monday, a new carpet was put in.

I’ve also installed a set of white venetian blinds in the window (which I discovered too late are about 2cm too narrow for complete comfort, although the next size up would have been 28cm too wide).

The reason I wanted venetian blinds is it means when the sun is coming through the window, I can play with the wonderful effect of the shadows created by them – all very film noir.

Now all I need is some people to photograph...

Well done! And secretly, I LOVE that door!

You should have no problem drawing people.

Hi Kim,
A Room of One’s Own…what a wonderful space you’ve created for yourself! Are you planning on displaying some of your portraits on the walls? How long to do think it’ll be before you tire of adjusting the venetian blinds?

ENJOY!!

Hoo boy! A nice clean, clear space like that wouldn't last long if I were in it. But I'm not . . . in it.

I love the smell of a freshly painted room and new carpet!

Wishing you both many days, months, years of creative fun (a proper space really helps)

It looks very peaceful and inspiring, and I do love the last photo.

A lovely clean and tidy space to work and create in... and all great photos in your entry.

Hope you have a great time in your new studio!!! The colour of the new carpet surely beats any yucky green. Enjoy!

White paint is absolutely the best paint to use in an office. It looks so clean and peaceful. Great place. I also think the picture of you is very nice as Hindsfeet so breathlessly put it.

Hope - the door?

Mapstew - is that like well worn?

Debra - thank you :)

Hindsfeet - it's just a photoshop filter. You go up to the menu bar, click on "Layers", then "Adjustments" then "Handsome fella". This is what I actually look like.

Litzi - I'm actually planning on keeping the wall bare so the maximum amount of light is reflected off them. And I don't think I'll ever tire of venetian blinds, so long as there is sun shining through them :)

Alan - It's not likely to last long for me either - I'm just going to enjoy it while it lasts...

Emma - thank you :)

Elizabeth - thank you :)

Lisa - I'm not sure how long it will remain clean and tidy. Space is at a premium in our house and it's only a matter of time before it starts getting used as a storage room

Falak - definitely better than the green, which might have cast a slightly sickly hue on the faces of anyone photographed

Savannah - thank you :)

Carole - unfortuantely I think Magnolia is still the default colour for most people. But I need as much light as possible - not just for the photography, but to help stave off the winter blues too

I must admit, I do find myself very envious of your work space. Also, if we ever manage to visit Scotland again, I'd like to get a family portrait done by you. I've been lurking around here for a while now, admiring your work.

Yes, the door...in the first photo. I love the texture of it, the mix of glass and wood.

Yeah, I know. Weird. But it's one of those "first impression" things that's always stuck with me when I visit people.

[Quietly walking away as to not attract too much attention to self.]

so cool!! i wish you lived closer to take our photos!!!

Looks great. Enjoy.

But I would need to stick just a little picture up in the middle of that beautiful, clean, pristine white wall!

Stripe me! Stripe me!

I'm so relieved you didn't throw away the yucky green carpet. You'll have it handy when you need it. A yucky green carpet.

looks good, but I've never been a white on white kind of person, but it works in that room. I've been thinking of venetian blinds just for the same look. might have to look into how much it would cost. Good luck into finding models, wish I lived closer.

The Lassie & Laddie - thank you for de-lurking and taking the time to comment - I'm a scuker for flattery, so please comment more often :)

Hope - I'm not judging you - just curious :)

Amy - the trick is to club together with a few neighbours to fly my out for a week or two and I'll do photography sessions in exchange for roof, board and pin money :)

Jacqui - the walls do look empty, but I think it helps to make it look more like a dedicated space rather than a converted living room

Murr - I read something recently that you should collect wrong answers/solutions because they are the right answers for a different question. I think the yucky green carpet might be one of those...

Lynne - time to book your next trip to Scotland... :)

More people needed to photograph?

I'll be right over. :-)

I love venetian blinds too, but not quite so much when it comes time to dust, say every year or so.

Hang onto that nasty old carpet! If you ever want to make your own fish pond, it's the perfect thing to put under the lining.

Kim Ayres said...

Pearl - I'll put the kettle on then...

Mary - we couldn't throw the carpet away as our house is rented, so technically it still belongs to the landlord. Although if he has to go through the same difficulty and trauma getting it down from the attic as Rogan, Holly and I went through trying to get it up there, he may well end up just leaving it as loft insulation.

Lynne said...

Kim, one day I would love to visit again. Fell in love with the land while I was there *cough*10yrago*cough* and I would love to go back and do more then visit, I would love to live there for awhile. If I ever make it over I'll be sure to look you up only if you promise to return the favor and be my model, but be forewarned, I like to make people smile. :-)

Kim Ayres said...

Lynne - so you were 11 when you visited Scotland?

More than happy to trade portrait taking :)

Lynne said...

LOL, you're sweet! ahhh lets just say that I had a 10 and 12 year old at the time. LOL And you are on we'll trade portrait when I finally make over there again. Oh and if you ever get a chance to visit the States, I'm in Atlanta Georgia

Kim Ayres said...

Lynne - well the other option is to do what I suggested to Amy, above. I've never been to Georgia, so get a few neighbours to club together so you fly me out for a week or 2 and I'll do portraits in exchange for bed, board and pin money :)

Lynne said...

need money for that. LOL

I soooo want you to photograph me - and then go get a cup of coffee together. Then we could look at your other phots and I could talk to you about my brother and then weight loss....geesh - I think I am a groupie! :) Just not the sex stuff...I am over that....

My wife will be relieved... :)

nice (self-deprecating) try, Kim...you're gorgeous. (please see previous disclaimer ; ) )

Very kind of you to say. I just wish more women had thought that back when I as a teenager and in desperate need of female attention :)
