Spring Fling 2008

.
Spring Fling is an annual open studio event across SW Scotland, where artists and craftspeople give access to the public to come and see the work they do in the place they create it.

It lasts from Saturday 24th May until Monday 26th and each year it grows bigger and the selection process becomes more rigorous.

The event is widely publicised and can result in many hundreds of people visiting each studio over the weekend. It’s a great chance for the public to meet and buy from the artists directly, and have a nose about the workplaces of creative people.

This year Maggie has been accepted into it, so the past few weeks have been spent planning, coordinating, shifting furniture and generally panicking a great deal.

As if this wasn’t taking up every last waking moment, coincidentally the annual Castle Douglas Food Town Day is happening on Saturday too. The main street is closed off and there are various stalls and food events taking part around the town.

This, of course, has proved to be too good an opportunity to miss for Rogan’s fledgling Cakes business, so he will be out, setting up a table and selling slices of cakes, various biscuits and assorted scones (all home baked), and handing out leaflets to anyone who strolls too close.

Rarely has the Ayres household been so full of excitement, panic, activity and exhaustion all at the same time.

I’m about to head off for my afternoon nap, but I will leave you with the video we created for Maggie’s YouTube page and Newsletter subscribers about Spring Fling.

Best of luck to both Maggie and Rogan for their upcoming events. I wish I could be there!

Awesome. Love the slide show of Maggie's work. Would love it more to see it up close and personal. And to sample Rogan's baked goods would be a dream. I predict monumental success for both.

You have an amazing family, Kim. An artist/baker wife, a food artist son, a gorgeous daughter and of course you, the proud patriarch writer.

How absolutely marvelous that this weekend is so joyfully busy for you all! Congratulations to Maggie for joining the Spring Fling and Rogan? Dude, I wish I could be there!

How exciting for all the family. It's years since we were up there and stayed near Dumfries. I wish you all the best of luck- you deserve to do well and how great for Maggie to be invited. Well done!

Canadian Girl - thank you :)

Jupiter's Girl - you're the astrologer, so I'll go with your predictions :)

Tom - thank you :)

Sini - thank you :)

Sayre - proud patriarch writer? More like tired onlooker... At least I've managed to contribute with business ideas, photography and web design. The real work is being done by everyone else. But yes, I'm very proud :)

C in DC - thank you :)

Pat - you'll have to let us know if you're ever planning a trip up this way again

I've watched Maggies's video several times and she is so talented. Very Cool. Would she be willing to donate her voice for a transplant? I would so think I was All That, if I had her voice.

Would that I could be there. I instead will venture this weekend to a town in Maryland where they will commemorate one of the Tea Parties that was held as part of that little rebellion we had over 200 years ago.

You have certainly managed to ally yourself with very talented people. Maggie's art is great and I am sure that Rogan's cakes are outstanding.

I'm so looking forward to seeing more of Maggie's work and sampling Rogan's wares. Must be hectic in the Ayres household. We'll try and get over before afternoon nap time!

Carole - a soft Scottish accent is a delight on the ear. I used to get her to record the message on my answering machine at my business until I realised it just reinforced people's expectations that KIM Ayres would be a woman

Savannah - thank you :)

Brave Astronaut - Hope you enjoy your cuppa

Eryl - good timing :)

Stella - thank you :)

I can picture all the fun and confusion! We got Maggie's spring fling card the other day and it is just beautiful -- the representative bit of work shown on it. It makes me picture cool mountain lakes and forests.

Maybe I'll be able to hitch a ride with Eryl or (gasp!) even drive our car all by myself. Last time I saw Maggie's exhibit, I drove almost all the way to CD by myself, after all! I'll just tell myself that. We have managed to see only one spring fling so far, and that isn't a very good record, is it?

Mary - Spring fling runs over the 3 days - Saturday to Monday. You only need to be about for Saturday if you want to sample Rogan's cookies, cakes & scones on his stall for the Food Town day

Wow, Maggie has a beautiful voice! Say Kim, I was wondering if you could pop over to my blog and give me some advice on my last entry. I very much appreciate your insights. Thank you!

Wow. If only my own family were even a smidgen as creative and entrepreneurial. I'm not saying I'm disappointed, but I do live in hope that one day my own creative streak will rub off on them.

Dr McCrumble - I think the twins sound incredibly enterprising - Perhaps they should watch the film of the Krays for a bit of inspiration ;)
