Part of that comes from the high standard of the selection process. On average, they accept only 5% of all the images submitted – and that's despite the fact people are putting forward their best work. In the space of nearly 4 years, I’ve only managed to get 9 of my photos on there - http://1x.com/member/17395/kim-ayres/
Around once a year they bring out a book with a selection of the images. This year it’s called “No Words” and they are only printing 2222 copies of it. It contains 220 amazing photos and I’m delighted to say they have included one of mine.
No Words

If you are the kind of person who doesn’t mind paying €89 for a beautiful book, then you won’t be disappointed, and you can buy it here: http://1x.com/books/no-words.
If the idea of paying €89 for a book threatens to induce a heart attack, then just visit 1x.com and enjoy the images on display on your computer screen.
Well deserved honor, Kim. Kudos to you. (o)
ReplyDeleteI like the man's shirt.
ReplyDeleteArtistic renderings of kohl-eyed "Trainspotters" are all the rage here in the frozen colonies.
Paying €89 for anything, beautiful or otherwise, that does not also render me unable to safely operate a motor vehicle is not heart smart as far as I am concerned.
Besides, it is illegal to even think about engaging in Euro-denominated commerce in the Canadas, much less actually doing so.
Congratulations though.
I'm *Delighted* for you, Kim, Truly....and thanks for this book recommendation, as it makes the perfect gift for a dear friend of mine (also a photographer).
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of book recommendations - and slightly off-topic here - have you ever, in your travels, read Bernie S. Siegel, M.D.'s, "Love, Medicine, & Miracles - Lessons learned about self-healing from a surgeon's experience with exceptional patients"? I'm in the middle of it now and from what you've shared in your blog, I'm betting it would be right up your alley. I think you'd appreciate it.
Well, as always, all the best to you and yours, Kim....thanks again for this share...
warmest,
Liz~*
Awesome photo, and the book looks wonderful! Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteWell-done, Kim!
ReplyDeleteIf I were a rich gal [or man], I'd buy that book.
I love books with beautiful photographs. I have some [not expensive] on our coffee-table and, every now and then, I stop whatever I'm doing, sit and look at the pictures. I feel peaceful, reflective, inspired, afterwards.
Debra - thank you :)
ReplyDeleteJezebel - man cannot live by whiskey alone. Not for that long, anyway...
Liz - I haven't heard of the book. I'll maybe keep a look out. However, one of the side effects of the ME/CFS that has not left me has been I cannot read more than a couple of pages of anything before my brain disengages and starts turning to mush. It means a single book can take me months to read, and the backlog of ones I have ready to go is getting bigger by the month :/
Legalmist - thank you :)
Guyana Gyal - do you ever take photos yourself? You have such an eye for people and detail in your writings, it's difficult to imagine you wouldn't also be able to translate some of that into photography :)
And you're getting better all the time:)
ReplyDeleteWell done Kim.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite an honour. I've looked at the site a few times and its really top quality. To get an image on there is a great achievement but to get it published is massive. I hope it inspires you to submit more in future.
All the best
Rab
Pat - thank you :)
ReplyDeleteRab - I submit fairly regularly - unfortunately my style of photography doesn't often match up to what they are looking for. My acceptance rate is pretty much exactly the average ratio of about 5%, so you can work out how many photos I've submitted since I joined...
I'm not so good at photography, Kim. I leave that to the truly talented
ReplyDelete:-)
GG - it's just practice. As a famous photographer once said, "your first 10,000 photos are your worst" :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you-all have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jerry - I hope you do too :)
