Online Scrabble

.
Ah, would you look at that: I’ll get the triple word score in the corner and catch that word coming down. 53 points. Nice.

Oh nuts. I’m playing Rogan.

I’m going to have to find a different word.

Arrrrgghh, there isn’t anything else which gives me anything like that amount of points. And he’s currently 30 points ahead of me.

He's 13; he's heard it all before. He hears it on TV, not to mention in the playground all the time. I mean, I even hear it freely bandied about by the kids at the primary school gates when I collect Meg.

Yeah, but Maggie wouldn’t be happy if I started using that word in a Scrabble game with him.

He probably wouldn’t tell her. It could be one of those secret father-son bonding things…

Oh, but what if he did?

Just stop it right now. I can’t put that word down.

Remember, it’s only a game.

But it’s 53 points!

Nuts, nuts, nuts. Sometimes this attempt at responsible parenting is a real pain.

  2. If I am right about the word, it does have other applications. Of course, it didn't stop me glaring when a guy at the Thomas event told his son to stop banging his head against the window because he'd "get retarded." I almost went so far as to tell him he'd probably catch it from his father first. But then he was bigger than the dude and the dude hates it when I start fights for him...

  3. He's a teenager. It's time he was embarrassed by the behaviour of his father. I trust you went for it - after all, it won't be long before he'll be hammering you at Scrabble so get those points in while you can.

  4. 53 points or a dirty look from Maggie... hmm, tough call. I trust you're enjoying your night sleeping on the couch.

  5. Personally, I'd have gone for it. I mean, we've got it in dictionaries already; that doesn't mean we have to use it, right? It's just letters on a board. Besides -- 53 points? Yeah, I'd have gone for it.

  6. Haha!

I'd have done it. For 53 points, you betcha I would!

Great post, Kim, I've come over all grinny!

  7. I brought my son up at a table peppered by the best of Anglo Saxon and he's (as you know) a most polite and gentle adult now.

  10. So everyone here thinks I should have put it down anyway?

What does it say about my writing that I can attract such a degenerate bunch of bloggers to comment...?

  11. Not degenerate, just competitive...

  12. you've told me about this weird habit you have of playing board games with your son from opposite ends of the house. If you were playing proper scrabble with the tiles you could guage his reaction as you put down each letter thereby giving you the chance to abort.
I think he would have been more pissed off at the score.

    word verification mqxww 100 points

  13. It certainly doesn't stop you from wiping the floor with me. Perhaps I'm the alternative to burying your son?

  14. Caro - welcome to my ramblings and thank you for taking the time to comment :)

Dr Maroon - I know him - he'd casually say to his mother, "Mum, can you look up this word in the dictionary for me that dad's put down..."

Brave Astronaut - don't worry, I won't hold back on bad language with you ;)

  16. hehehehe...what a dilemma!

BTW, Hubby and I have been laughing our heads off at Kevin the Teenager!

    Big Kid feels insulted. ;-)

  17. Savannah - sigh... yes I think you're right

Attila - Kevin the teenager is just sooooo accurate. One of Harry Enfield's finest creations :)

  18. I think you would be wise not to risk it. It may be used against you for years and years to come.

  19. I think that's the wisest comment I've had, Pat :)

  20. Yeh I would've used it, and pretended it was no big deal. If he reacts to it, then just state that its fine within a game context, but that he's never to repeat it outside of a game with only him and his father playing :)
