Snow has arrived in Castle Douglas!

At long last, snow has finally arrived in Castle Douglas. Just before heading for bed I noticed that it was beginning to fall and settle, but was convinced it would turn to rain through the night, leaving no sign of it come the morning. But I was wrong.

Much to my surprise about 8 inches of snow settled and the garden was covered in a soft white blanket. Not only is this my first real snow of this winter, but it's the biggest amount I've seen in one go for years.

I was quite amazed at the intensity of feeling I was overwhelmed with. It tapped right into the pathways laid down in childhood and I could barely contain my excitement. So after breakfast it was out into the garden for a snowball fight with Rogan. Meg came out for a while and the three of us built a snowman while Maggie watched from the cosy warmth of the house.

While making a snow angel, Rogan discovered that with the snow this thick he could literally throw himself at the ground without it hurting - as the snow compacted beneath him it absorbed the shock.

After a tentative experiment myself, it wasn't long before the two of us were running around, hurling ourselves at patches of virgin snow wherever we could find them in the garden.

It was so much fun I was giggling like a child again. I really need more things like that in my life.

You can click on any of the photos below to take you larger versions. The first two are of the main street in Castle Douglas and the final one is of the snowman and triumphant builders that I promised a couple of posts ago.

  1. My children would kill for snow like that, particularly if it meant school being closed (which it would down here in the wussy south ;-).
    And what a fab snowman!

  2. After watching the news this evening I was going to post a comment on your last entry (along the lines of 'look out the window, quick'), but there's clearly no need. Glad you've been blessed. And as Mine Is A Gin said, great snowman - the results of my snowman-building efforts have always been abominable.

That photo raises further questions about your identity... I'm thinking Aragorn.

  3. You had snow, We had rain.

I did not, however, throw myself with abandon into a mud puddle.

  5. Am it me... or do snowman look like someone we know?

  6. Mine is a Gin - The kids have just found out that the primary school is closed today. My son is delighted, but my daughter is disappointed as she get's swimming on a Monday. With kids you can never please all of them

Foot Eater - I fear "Gimli" is probably more accurate...

Kippa - welcome to my ramblings. Thank you for taling the time to comment. Easter Island heads sound like fun to start making. I't turning to slush at the moment so I'll probably have to wait until next year now.

Charlie - I read your post. I can't begin to imagine not having rain for 6 months. Sounds heavenly to someone living in Scotland

    Attila - thank you

Monstee - who did you have in mind?

  7. Remember respect the snowy enviroment so our snowpeople can flourish!

  8. I resent that Monstee!
Now that is a snowman. A Topper! Well done.
I love it when people make the effort. Even the 'two big snowball' ones look good if they're finished off properly.

There will be tears come the thaw, but I'm sure the kids will help you through it.

  9. Charlie - and don't bring them in to warm up by the fire - their mother's will get confused by their scent and not take them back again, even if they don't melt

Dr Maroon - I didn't include 2 big snow balls as the kids were present

Sven - I don't think we've ever had anything to match your Halloween '91 though.

  10. That's the great thing about *occasional* snow. When you get occasional snow, its an event. Its fun and exciting, and you run outside and build snowmen and have snowball fights, and laugh at cousin Timmy for eating yellow snow (ok, just me?).

However, when you live somewhere where it snows a lot, you never end up doing those things, because snow is an annoyance.

  13. Asher - but I always though that yellow snow was the tastiest...

St Jude - it was a lot of fun!

Gyrobo - and a very happy unbirthday to you today

  14. Wow, I just noticed the photos. The snowman is amazing!!! And everything looks so clean and quiet...sigh.

  15. It wasn't that quiet - Maggie had barely put the camera away when Rogan decided to hit me with several more snowballs!

  21. Didn't get any this year (2007)

  22. Your snowman had total class. Mine is always just the three balls set on top of each other with raisins, carrots and such for facial features. Creative, creative, creative.

  23. It's still just 3 snowballs on top of each other, then with a few bits added or gouged out

  24. Kim, sweet post. Awesome snowman.
