Wrong Question

.
How likely am I to become an internationally renowned, sought after portrait photographer?” is the wrong question.

How much fun will it be trying to become an internationally renowned, sought after portrait photographer?” is a much better way of putting it.

It reminds me it is all about the journey.

The destination is a side effect, not the purpose.

  5. Exactly, do something because you love it and the rest will come. I mean, crikey, you've already got your first exhibition!!!!!

  6. Well "technically" you already are internationally famous for your photography if you consider how far we, your blog friends, are strewn about the earth. :)

You know why I like the toaster photo? Because the guy in it is being silly and having fun...for the fun of it. Carry on. :)

  7. Exactly! Just go for it and have fun.

  8. The destination sometimes defeats the journey. You are on a beautiful journey and I thank you for sharing it with me (us).

  11. Same thing I ask myself....

"How likely am I to become a size 2 supermodel?"

    or

"How much fun am I gonna have throwing up, starving myself, running till I drop, and weighing in every morning only to find at the end of the month that I've lost an eighth of an ounce?"

um, ok, wait, maybe it's not the same thing....

;) hee hee hee...a little levity....

rootin' for ya Buddy : )

  12. Simply awesome news re exhibition Kim! As the late, great Peter Brock once said about his secret to success "Bite off more than you can chew ...then chew like mad!"
How great to know you have so many people all over the world cheering you on :)

  13. Abos-bloodly-lutely!

Glad you have this already figured out Kim. I spent weeks suffering from success (and it was a relatively small one), only to discover the reason why. Its not reaching goals that make me happy, or 'achieving' (*winces*) Its the little everyday things like smiling with people, connecting deeply, having cups of tea (or coffee) and a good natter, or hugging the kid.

Any fool knows this, but when you set your sights high its hard to appreciate the everyday sometimes.

By the way, (in regards to the last comment on your last post) I try to be completely honest in my feedback about your art, and I think I am a reasonable judge, I hope so anyway :)

  14. So true, Mr Beard. I'm constantly reminding myself of this. It's all in the spirit of the game!

  17. True!

I'm voting for the toaster picture to be the one of yourself you end up displaying too!

  18. You are more amazingly awesome than you even realize. This goes right in hand with the old saying "Happiness is having a job you love." I have always felt bad for people who have a job that is just something to do between weekends.

  19. Hi Kim,
We can all say we knew him when….

  20. All the very best! Have fun because more than the exhibition itself it is all the little things during the making of the exhibition that will be worth remembering when it is all over and done with . Praying for you:)

  21. Pat - it surprised me :) It was one of those occasions where I was explaining to someone else and these words came out. And I thought, ooh that sounds interesting. Perhaps I should listen in on what I'm saying more often... :)

Mapstew - I'll join you for a fresh orange and soda :)

    Gillian - :)

Savannah - that's a great story, thanks for the link ((hugs back atya)) :)

    V - thank you :)

Eryl - you'll be getting an invite to the opening :)

Hope - I think "famous" is a bit of an overstatement...

    Jayne - :)

Midnitefyrfly - thank you for coming along :)

Helen - I never enjoyed travelling alone...

    Simply - thank you :)

Hindsfeet - I think that illustrates the point precisely :)

Library Girl - a lot of it is just giving yourself permission to bite...

Katie - keep me real, then :)

    Chastity - :)

Roschelle - positive vibes are always welcome :)

Chocolatesa - I'm going to have to think about that one - it's not really in keeping with my ideas for the rest of the exhibition

Litzi - "and he seemed such a nice guy back then..."

Falak - right now I'd feel a touch happier if I had more people lined up to photograph...

    TalesNTypos - :)

  22. Absolutely. And you can even leave out one of the adjectives from "internationally renowned, sought after portrait photographer" and you've still got a decent enough journey.

  23. Just like Gilda used to say, "Keep thinking those good thoughts".

  24. Looking forward to seeing photos of your prep for your exhibition. A behind the scenes photo essay.

  25. I'd gladly line up to have my picture taken but unfortunately I don't have the money to pay my plane ticket over there :P

  26. I just love the optimism and drive behind this post! The journey is definitely where it's at.

  27. Gadjo - but why miss some out? I might add more :)

Willow - is that a Wizard of Oz reference?

Ron - as this blog is full of whatever happens to be on my mind at the time, and this exhibition is definitely on my mind a great deal, so you can be sure of plenty more posts to come about it. In fact there might be a problem writing about anything else...

Chocolatesa - you need to get a few friends and colleagues to all chip in a couple of hundred dollars each to pay for the flights over for me and the family for a couple of weeks, and then I'll do photo sessions in return :)

Starrlife - change the narrative and you fundamentally change the experience :)
