Natural Born Leader

.
(Also posted on 5 Minutes for Special Needs)

Meg has entered P7 – the final year of primary (elementary) school.

When they asked if anyone wanted to stand for House Captain, it didn’t cross Meg’s mind that she shouldn’t go for it.

She created a wee speech and, with the 6 others who are standing, went round all the classes and delivered her few lines on why she should be House Captain for Deer.

Apparently she got lots of applause and cheers at the end of each delivery to the different classes.

We’ll find out next week who’s won.

Down’s Syndrome doesn’t stand in the way of her expecting to be able to represent and lead the other children in her school.

Does it surprise me she puts herself forward for positions of leadership?

Not really. In common with everyone else in this household, she’s crap at following orders.

  3. Good for Meg, being crap at following orders is the first step to a happy life.

  4. That made me cheer out loud! Just like my last post about the Youngest egging me on up the mountain. Her an asthmatic, urging the ouldfella on and on! Kids, we'd be nowhere without 'em!

You and Maggie are so doing a good job!

  6. Yeah Meg! Wouldn't surprise me at all if you don't have a house captain on your hands next week.

  7. Brave Astronaut - don't give her ideas!

Hope - I'm in a house full of them - have you heard of the expression, "Too many chiefs, not enough braves"?

Eryl - I hear the voice of an uberwench, I mean ubermench...

Mapstew - unfortunately the wee ones have little idea of how old they make us feel sometimes :)

Christina - it's not entirely beyond the realms of possibility :)

St Jude - on the one hand, of course I'd like here to be, but on the other, she already seems to think she ought to be the one giving orders as it is and this could just make matters worse...

  8. I love Meg's spirit. And it is a credit to you and Maggie that she doesn't seem to occur to her that there are things she might not be able to do - she just does it. That is an attitude that will stand her in good stead her whole life.

  9. Sayre - large doses of determination and naïveté are needed to achieve many things. If we really knew what we were up against, we wouldn't start, and so wouldn't achieve :)

    Attila - thank you :)

    Pat - you're a love :)

  10. Meg is a wonderful little girl and I agree with others that she will win, but I understand your dilemma. In the Ayres household, it appears to be two males under the thumbs of two females.

You might just as well get over it and surrender.

  11. LOL. That's cute. Must be in the genes. Does everyone talk and none listens? But wait, their otherwise rare silence could be sufficient praise.

  13. Good for Meg! I didn't tell you that I saw her and Maggie coming home just as I was driving away from your house. They both look lovely. What a lovely family you are.

  14. Children are so marvellous. Sometimes I think all we can give them is (a) love (obviously) and (b) the belief that they do have the confidence to face any and all challenges that come their way. Sounds like you're doing a great job over there.

  17. Charlie - make that one male under the thumb of 2 females and a teenage son...

Khanh Ha - rare silence... so rare, I've forgotten what it sounds like :)

Savannah - and we all love you :)

Daphne - the timing was a bit odd - when I first heard them coming through the door I thought you were nipping back in because you'd forgotten something. Shame the timing was a bit askew

Rachel - not just children - adults need love and belief too :)

Jimmy - welcome back - hope you had a good holiday :)

KarateMom - blind ignorance and complete determination are how most things are achieved in the world I think :)
