Normal service...

.

In order to stay in power, I see politicians have now formed a coalition with... get this... other politicians!

Is there any hope for us?

Meanwhile, my computer was becoming increasingly temperamental which ultimately forced me to implement the “restore factory settings” protocol, thereby wiping everything on it and starting again.

I thought I’d backed everything up, but I forgot about things like my favourites/bookmarks on my browser, and a whole bunch of fonts I like to use in poster, leaflet and web design.

Bleargh.

Anyway, having reinstalled all the programs I use, put all the backed up data back on it, and adjusted all the settings so everything is laid out how I like it, the bloody thing is still playing up.

It especially seems to enjoy randomly not recognising the router and disconnecting me from the internet.

This ongoing frustration has kept me away from blogging for too long and I’ve been getting withdrawal symptoms.

Hopefully at some point normal service will be resumed. Although what normal service actually is, is anyone’s guess.

How frightening Kim if it can happen to you what hope for loonies like me?
BTW I love your smouldering photo (of you). Best yet.

My hard drive is showing signs of illness and I should have the contents transferred to a new one. But I probably won't.

I received my copy of "Staring Back" a couple days ago and it's beautiful! I was especially surprised by the cloth cover under the jacket—all the large book publishers use cheap, warped cardboard.

Your book is a real treasure, Kim. Thank you for writing and, of course, photographing it.

I had the same problem for ages, sudden disconnection from the internet that is, and Bob spent days searching for the why of it. Turned out to be the router, I was the only one affected but I am the only one who connects wirelessly. Anyway, we got a new, much more powerful, router and now everything is fine.

Go Mac, man. It'll change your pyooting life. Worth the extra pennies. Think of what you'll save on Anadin alone!

I feel your pain. Please avoid the temptation to literally give it the boot...off the desk. :)

Deep breath. Resume typing when you can do so without cursing.

I know. That may take a while. We'll be here when you return. :)

Having gone through my own computer frustration a month ago, I decided to take the plunge in an iMac. That has been the best decision I've made in years. If you do decide to go the Mac way, get the 27 inch screen. You wont' regret it. In fact you'll say to yourself, "where has this been all my life?"

As for backup, get an external hard drive. I had one on my year and a half Dell when it crashed last month. Saved my life. I didn't lose my 75,000 plus pictures. Yes, I do have that many pictures.

I was concerned about your absence. I thought perhaps you were in a deep funk because of the elections. Is it me are do the two new guys (in your coalition government) look like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum?

Kim,

Unfortunately...have been there, done that. what a pain.

Hmm, the word verification is ovelex. Sounds like a new Ovaltine-laxitive product, somewhat like a coalition of politicians.

Savannah - thank you :)

Pat - smouldering, eh? I must have left the lasagne in the over too long...

Charlie - I'm glad you got it and so pleased you like it. I've not actually seen the hard cover version - I only bought the soft-cover for myself

Eryl - the router works fine for 2 other computers in the house, so I'm afraid it's definitely this laptop :(

Carole - I may still be sporadic for a while, but I'm not abandoning the blog just yet

Sam - I can't afford Mac, especially having recently thrown us into lifelong debt in order to get a good camera

Hope - I don't think I've ever broken anything in anger. Apart from my little finger, when I got into a fight with a kid at school when I was 12.

Mapstew - they are, aren't they. I love technology when it works, and despise it when it doesn't

Ron - as mentioned to Sam, above, after getting the new camera, I won't be able to afford a Mac for several decades. As for the new rulers, oddly enough they are both the same age as me. If I'd come from a posh wealthy family and lived in the right place I'd have gone to school with them. Now that's a scary thought...

Larry - that's an extremely good analogy :)

Technology at its worst is like a sullen teenager. No matter how you tackle it, it's still not going to do what you want until either a) it's over the sulk or b)something (or someone) has come along to cheer it up.

I lost all my bookmarks last year and could hardly believe how badly it threw me. Hope you get back on track soon!

Mary - thank you :)

I use Carbonite to automatically back up my computer every time I'm on the darn thing. It's only $50/year and if your computer crashes it's got everything.

I know the horse is kind of out of the barn now. Just something to keep in mind.
