This isn’t just any chocolate cake...

The deep, dark, rich smells filling the house betray the emergence of chocolate sponge from a warm oven. Soon it will be filled with thick, creamy chocolate icing, with even more coating the outside and dripping down from the upper surface of the cake. Given the proximity to the forthcoming ancient Spring festival, mini chocolate Easter-eggs will adorn the top.

This isn’t just any chocolate cake, this is a sumptuous, scrumptious, velvety, heavenly, melt-in-the-mouth, Maggie’s home-baked chocolate cake, created specially for the last evening class of the Intro to Moral Philosophy course I’ve been running since January.

It’s the only reason some of them have stuck with it over the past few months.

Can I come over? LOL

From the sound of it, I'd say it's a good reason!

Home baked? That'll never reach the sheer quantity of cookies that a large, faceless corporation can generate.

Are you teaching another class soon?

OK. I confess! You've got me bang to rights, guv. You've tumbled to my game. The only reason I've permitted myself to endure torture by Neitzsche & Kant (no, this isn't cockney rhyming slang)and all the other moralisers is the thought of Maggie's chocolate cake waiting at the end of it. Id like two slices please.

Nikki - only for those who've completed the Philosophy course, I'm afraid.

Stinkypaw - pretty much the only reason I can think of..

Gyrobo - I know. How can we possibly compete?

Eva - Unfortunately, in its infinte wisdom, the local council has decided that in its need to cut budgets to deal with its debts from chronically stupid decisions and management, it is cutting all adult education evening classes.

So unless someone with an ounce of common sense in their head who realises that education doesn't end when you leave school and that an educated community is far more likely to generate more money into the local economy, then that's it. No more classes. [/rant]

Mark - does this mean you're going to be spending the rest of the day mugging and hosiptalising the rest of the philosophy group so there'll be more cake for you tonight?

You tease us with a story about a melt in your mouth chocolate cake, and then don't give the recipe?!

I thought you liked us.

It's almost enough to make me want to take up philosophy.

I have a cousin who shamelessly bribes her students with baked goods. She was having trouble with a few of them not long ago and threatened to stop bringing in cinnamon pecan pastries, oatmeal cookies and lemon poppyseed cake. That straightened them out pretty quick.

Wow, based on that description, it might be worth cheating the wheat allergy gods and trying one bite--just one!

Oh wow, good thing you did not put a picture of it, I would have had to have chocolate cake for breakfast...

Pat - the chocolate content far exceeded your recommended 4 squares per day, unless you wanted a fortnight's quantity per bite.

Quinn - if you ever sign up for an evening course, I would ask up front whether a chocolate cake is provided in the last class of term. If not, choose a different subject.

Pendullum - thank you.I've never felt poetic desciption was my strong point, but this felt like it needed to be written from the heart, or stomach, or tastebuds...

Michael - thanks for the link. I'll be over to look at the movies soon.

Brave Astronaut - welcome to my ramblings and thank you for taking the time to comment. I'll have a word with my wife to see if she's prepared to divulge the recipe, but to be honest, it's unlikely to give you exact measurements beyond a shake of this and a shuggle of that. In the meantime, you can check out her Bramble Crumble recipe

Mary - your cousing sounds like a wise woman.

Restaurant Gal - just one bite wouldn't get you as far as the wheat - you'd still be on the chocolate layers.

Christina - only crumbs left to photograph now :)

There's something inherently morally corrupting about chocolate cake. You're a teaching genius.

I think I am the only woman I know that does not get the appeal of chocolate. It's so dull. Although your description is delightful.

Chocolate cake is the way to heaven.

Thus said me.

Kieran - To fully explore morality you have to understand its fragile nature

FMC - I suddenly feel like I've crossed into an alternative universe. Surely chocolate is the 5th dimension after time and space?

Pat - you're worth it

Eryl - Was it Kant or Nietzsche who first made the link between Chocolate and Truth?
