Maggie Ayres - Mixed Media and Textile Artist

My wife, Maggie, hasn’t often been mentioned on this site much beyond her extraordinary cooking skills and infinite patience. This is primarily to do with respecting her emotional privacy – while I’m happy to go on at length about existential angst and the length of my beard, Maggie is an altogether more reserved and private person.

She is also incredibly artistic and creative.

When we decided to change our lives and move to this corner of Scotland, it wasn’t just about me seeing if it was possible to become a writer; Maggie also wanted to pursue her artistic drives.
In the 16 years I’ve known her, she has created jewellery, stained glass, some stunning photography and glass painting. Now she is working with a variety of textiles and media to capture thoughts, feelings and moods through the use of light, colour and texture.

Personally I think what she creates is exquisite. Of course, I would say that wouldn’t I? It doesn’t change the fact that I believe it to be true though.

Well, here’s your chance to find out, and even to see what she looks like, as I’ve finally gotten around to building her a website, which you can find at www.maggieayres.co.uk.

Please have a look round and if you like her artwork, I have a small favour to ask – would you link to her?

As a new website, it’s not always easy to get a decent listing on the search engines, but most of them rank sites according to “link popularity”. In essence, the number of sites linking, and the actual words used in that link, affect how high up the rankings a site moves. So if any of you could find a small space on your sidebar that links to Maggie’s site, using the phrase “Maggie Ayres - Textile and Mixed Media Art” then it would be greatly appreciated.

And if anyone wanted to do a wee blog entry/review on the website, using the same phrase as a link in the title of their blog entry (note – I have done it with this entry – the title links through to her website), then that would be truly wonderful and I’d be more than happy to pass on any of the expertise I gathered over the years from running a web design company should you ever need it.

If you feel I have broken some kind of blogging protocol, then I apologise and everything will be back to normal by the next post.

HI kim!!
I love how you are so supportive of your wife..wow...
I went to the site, I will go back again soon. I wanted to say that I had a neighbour that is also an artist and she did similar type art with textures incorporated into her paintings. For years she just worked out of her home and her masterbedroom was her studio as it had the best lighting. Her loving husband supported her as well..bravo..
She has since gotten recognition and has now found space in a gallery and has had a couple of shows!!..
I bet it wont be long then for Maggie....so keep at it and deffinately get the word out so people can see what she has as there is deffinately a market for it I know this first hand.

now as for me and my blog post...I put that because although I have it worked out on my end..there are alot of my favorite bloggers out there that have to change there settings on moderate comments so that , like yours, it allows comments from other as well as anonymous ..otherwise I still cannot leave a comment for them.. I do not want them to think I am not comming to see their blogs anymore but I am unable to leave comments until they change their settings.

I think I will look and see if my friend has a website showing her work too..perhaps Maggie would like to see it if she does ..and perhaps they can contact eachother..that would be cool eh ..

You're right Kim, Maggie is wonderfully artistic. I too will be checking back on her site and if I ever set my blog up again I will definitely link to her.

I like Maggie's artwork a lot. Especially "Flow" and "Rush". I loved those. There's a lot to look at in them and they look like they could be good mood reflectors dependant on the weather. Materials out in the open in nature seem to take on all the mood of the light and tinker with the mood to make it more subtle. I think that's the loveliness of the materials she's chosen.

I will most certainly link to her site, and I wish her the best of luck now she has a chance of reaching a larger viewing public!

I've added a link - I'm happy to do so, Maggie's work is so beautiful. I hope it brings her the recognition she clearly deserves.

ps: I like the site design too, nice work!

It's your blog, you decide the correct protocol. Oh, and if you don't ask you don't get ;-)

Thank you all for the positive feedback. While Maggie loves creating her art, she's a lot more hesitant about drawing attention to herself, so she got a nice wee confidence boost from the positive comments.

Thank you Kate and Sam for linking - it's greatly appreciated.

And thank you Kate for the comment about the website. When I ran the web design company, I worked with professional graphic designers to come up with the visual elements. Can't afford that now so I just had to take my best shot, although I might have called in a favour if it had been disasterous.

Maggie has some truly lovely work on her site. I adore the vibrancy of the colour, as well as the texture. Really beautiful.

Best wishes,

Branden

Link established.

I am not normally a big fan of mixed media art, but your wife's creatins are quite lovely. I particularly liked the "Waterfall" and "Tumble"!

Oh, and don't mind Tink. For all her being a smart ass, she is fun to read.

Branden - thank you

Odd Mix - welcome to my ramblings and thanks for your kind comments

Nice, nice. I like the things, though I'm not so sure about how to take 'em. I like the greeny-greenish one.
That picture of your missus misses her full profile. Can we get one of her smiling at us? That way I can have a pretend conversation with her and she'll maintain eye contact.

Seriously, though, that site is neat--albeit tiny. Did you design it?

Kim Ayres said...

Smiling at the camera? How American. A reserved Scottish lass would never be so brazen - ask Doc Maroon, he knows all about these things.

Yes I did design the site (see my first reply comment to Kate above). It looks fine in 800x600 and 1024x768 screen resolutions. It even looks ok on my 1200x800 laptop, so if it looks tiny, I'm guessing you have a larger screen set-up.

Well Kim, since we're pimping art now, I have a deal to offer you. I'll link to your lovely wife's site, if you link to my lovely brother's site: http://www.marcjerome.com/

he's been living/working in New York for ages, and has built a bit of a name for himself. Recently, he's been ill with transverse myelitis (not sure about the spelling) and hasn't been able to work much, in fact he was wheelchair bound when I saw him in August, and his right leg was pretty much useless, but he is on the road to recovery now, but if he could sell a painting or two, it'd help his rent/bill situation greatly. The web site has more bio and samples of his works (I especially like the etchings).

Deal?

RC - what an odd way of putting things - I'm not sure if it's a compliment or insult

Andraste - it's a deal. I've put up a link, although I can't seem to get through to it just now. I'll check again later.

Hi Kim,

I just clicked on the link from your site, and it worked fine. One thing though, his middle name is Jerome. The link should say "Marc Pelletier," as he doesn't go by Jerome at all, they just used that as a domain name (if that's the right terminology) because that's how his e-mail address is set up.

Weird that the link is working for me, but it doesn't seem to work on your computer...I just typed it into my browser, and it was okay there too.

Oh, and thanks! Maggie's link will be up shortly, soon as I get a second to play around with the template.

Your wife's work is absolutely stunning - I'm particularly struck by the movement in them. It must be wonderful to be surrounded by such beautiful creations! :) I've put up a link on my blog, too. Thanks for letting people know about this - and as someone else said, your support is a wonderful thing.

Andraste - Thanks for the link. Your brother's name has now been changed. I still can't seem to access the site yet. don't know why. Tesco.net isn't blocking anything else. Maybe it's just a blip and I'll be able to get it tommorrow. I'm now incredibly curious to see what his work is like.

Freakazojd - many thanks for your kind words and support - it's greatly appreciated.
